COVID-19 Relief

Since 2020, Kené Kaya helped raise funding to support 238+ families living in the community of Cantagallo, a high-risk area of infection due to lack of water and electricity, 2 public bathrooms available for community use. Largely neglected by the Peruvian government, the Shipibo-Konibo tribe relied on support from non-profits to survive the pandemic. With closed borders and total lockdowns for over a year, families could no longer rely on selling artisan tapestries and handicrafts due to lack of tourism and shut down markets. Kené Kaya also partnered with a local food bank in Lima, Banco de Alimentos, to donate food for the families of Cantagallo.

Kené Kaya also supported fundraising a total of $5,000 Peruvian soles for building two classrooms with the help of the non-profit Comunidad Peru, which has executed numerous initiatives in the community for economic empowerment. This school intercultural bilingual education for more than 450 Shipibo-Konibo children in Cantagallo.
